         artist's statement

They were here first.

Mountains are relics of time eternal,

barely changed in the age of human existence.

Their flora and fauna vary like the weather but the Mountains endure.  Modern Man’s busy-ness crowds

the Mountains out of his minds awareness.

He dwells only rarely on the beauty of distant peaks.

The Mountains’ significance

has been reduced to a number:

how much snowpack, how many elk,

how many board-feet of lumber

and what minerals lie buried there.

Assayed land ends up boundary lines on a map,

but a map won’t show you the

magnificent view or leave you in wonder.
